Bloody Cigarettes shares emotional narrative in ‘It’s Only Music’

Bloody Cigarettes is a solo project from Maximilien Gault, the artist exploring love and loss. Beginning his musical journey from Barcelona, and now finding himself in the recording studios of Paris, one thing has stayed the same, Max writes from the intimacy within his bedroom walls.

The name Bloody Cigarettes represents the image of a cigarette stained by lipstick, an evocative notion, feeding into Max’s sources from old movies, vintage comic books and the musicians he loves.

A new single to come out of the project ‘It’s Only Music’ is a track of pure indie rock individualism. Heartbroken and frustrated, Max balances moments of subdued, acoustic-driven pain with a hurting roar, the distortion and emotional layers a tug on the heartstrings.

“I wrote ‘It’s Only Music’ as a kind of epilogue to the narrative of my previous songs. The track captures the evolution of a relationship that moved from lust to love, then betrayal and excess, and ultimately into grief and acceptance,” Max explains.

Pulling the audience between wistful memories and the punchy anguish of the present, this narrative movement is evident. Max’s thoughts and optimism seem not to reside in a sense of positivity, but with a fading hope that he can’t quite let go. The sigh, quietly released over the calm piano’s last chord as guitars have faded, is a culmination of all this agony.

Max continues, “The title reflects the realisation that, after everything we went through, all that remains is the music that was born from our love story. It’s about finding solace in what’s left behind and embracing the beauty in the songs that carry our memories.”
