Eighty Ninety – ‘Heart on the Line’

‘Are we falling in love / Or apart at the seams’

Late last week, following on from their earlier 2021 release – Forever, New York indie-pop duo Eighty Ninety, consisting of brothers Abner and Harper James, are back with their latest new single, Heart on the LineSkilled and known for delivering incredible stripped back, indie-led tracks that no doubt leave you all in your feelings; Heart on the Line is no exception. Another dazzling cinematic moment from the pair, they continue to showcase their incredible talent and have been garnering increasing attention and acclaim, with their music racking up over 29 million streams to date.

Beginning the track is a delicate guitar-led instrumental that brings you into the immersive and captivating soundscape, before Abner’s signature vocals emerge onto the scene. With the minimalistic and gentle instrumental running throughout, it is a perfect sentimental and atmospheric track to accompany the winter vibes that are now here in full force. And alongside the enchanting melody, the song highlights the duo’s songwriting prowess as they deliver a narrative all about a make-or-break moment in a relationship where you’re confronted with the choice to continue fighting for the love and partnership you’ve built, or to let it slip away.

Delivering details on the creative process behind Heart on the Line, the pair explain:

“When we produced ‘Heart on the Line’ we wanted it to feel personal — almost like it was recorded late at night after one of the midnight phone calls we’re writing about in the song. But we also wanted the choruses to feel cinematic because even though feelings around these moments are personal, they can feel so huge. To show that contrast, we used minimal verses and lonely, distant counter melodies with sweeping, harmony-stacked choruses”.
