Indyana releases her enthralling debut album ‘the navy baby’

Embracing beautifully ethereal cinema in her music, Indyana’s musings and fascination with the inner workings of the universe have guided her music since she began her artistic journey. Over the course of her musical growth, she’s gone from classically trained musician to experimental singer-songwriter.

In her latest project, debut album the navy baby, Indyana seeks to understand mortality and find her peace with death. Through the navy baby character, she sees herself as a more celestial being, amongst the stars, perceiving things differently than we would in our day-to-day lives.

Musically, this is portrayed through graceful acoustics and delicate melodic steps. Indyana wears her heart on her sleeve, building vast productions and telling raw stories. Throughout all this, the project remains palatable, the angelic vocal performance a point of solace amongst the often haunting backdrop.

The production is intricate and enthralling, conceptual and elegant, and shows a talent that I sincerely hope we’ll get to see more of.

Indyana explains, “I, and many people in my life, struggle to accept the inevitability of death due to the fact that life itself feels so vivid and everlasting. How could it simply end? Just like that? There have been days where I let my fear tip me over into a state of deep, terrible panic. Contrasting this, there have also been days during which I decided to courageously exist in spite of my mortality because… why would I choose suffering when I could choose joy?

Despite humankind’s inability to fully grasp the concept of death, we must audaciously embrace it at one point or another. And, even as I continue to flicker between a state of peace and fear, creating ‘the navy baby’ was like creating a coping mechanism in order to help me reach my end goal, which is to be accepting of every phase of life, transforming fearlessly from one form to the next.”
