Features Interviews Introducing Music

Last month, emerging pop singer-songwriter Gillian Heidi released her third single of the year – Desperate. With emotive and reflective lyrics, rich vocals, and clever pop melodies, her songs are relatable but never predictable. Chronicling the ups and downs of life, her songs radiate candour and heartfelt emotion; and these documentations of life’s trials and tribulations are all executed with thoughtful clarity, poetic eloquence, and a stirring soulful voice. Following on from her recent singles, High and StaticDesperate is another preview of Gillian’s forthcoming debut album, 3AM, which is set for release later this year. Following the release of Desperate, we caught up with Gillian to chat in more depth about the track!

Tell me a bit about the inspiration and creative process behind Desperate?

I think that “desperate” is a standout from the album because it has even more of a story to it than my other songs. “desperate” definitely stemmed from my own true emotions but I also spent a lot of the songwriting process creating and building the characters within the song.

Desperate has a really beautiful instrumentation on the track; how did that come about?

I originally wrote “desperate” on the piano, but the beautiful production of the track is all thanks to my producer, Sergio Sanchez, and my engineer, Brandon Blanchard. The creative process with my producer and engineer was truly incredible — we created such a safe and productive space to develop the songs.

What is the best way to listen to, and enjoy, Desperate?

I feel like the best way to listen to “desperate” is late at night, maybe surrounded by some colorful lights. It’s definitely a late night track and almost ethereal.

Was there anything in particular about Desperate that made you feel like it was the perfect track to release as the next single?

I’ve always really loved “desperate,” but I knew I didn’t want it to be the first single. For some reason, I had a very strong feeling that urged me to release it as the third single, after “static.

And today, Gillian has just released her newest single, Fray. A gorgeous piano-lined ballad, steeped in emotion, Fray examines a relationship that is slowly falling apart. Talking about the track, Gillian spoke about how “I really tried to convey the feeling of when something is just beginning to fall apart, but it hasn’t gone down in flames yet. The song is emotional and raw, but not angry”. And through her honest and poignant vocals, we hear her the true vulnerability as she savours the final moments of the relationship.

My brother is the one who inspired me to start playing music when he started playing piano. I had always loved to sing, but when I started playing piano, I really began to pursue creating my own music.
