Northern Californian Kayo is on a mission to bring trap soul to the masses. Though his voice is R&B and hip-hop, he is also inspired by rock groups, which adds an individualising element to his production style.
With his latest track, ‘Inked Up’, Kayo sets the scene from the get-go. The soft acoustic tones and distant vocal samples contextualise the forthcoming trap drums and humming synths.
The vocals are melodic and flowing, layered across the soundscape for that distinctive modern hip-hop production feel with slight tuning and reverberating hooks.
A nod to those rock influences, the track gives space to a guitar solo, perfectly complimenting the other styles at play with an expressive tone before the last chorus.
