In his latest release, ‘Black Spring,’ Venezuelan composer Marko Ivic masterfully weaves a tapestry of emotions through his captivating piano arrangement. The piece begins with a sentimental pull, drawing listeners in with a repeating rhythm that subtly shifts harmonic direction, unveiling an intricate soundscape. A delicate melody emerges, navigating a sombre atmosphere with fragile optimism, flowing through rhythms that evoke a sense of naivety. As the composition progresses, it transitions into an energised section, where cascading delays and additional elements intensify the tension and ferocity, yet the delicate melodic protagonist continues to shine. The track then gently retreats to its serene origins, leaving an air of acceptance and reflection.
Reflecting on the origins of ‘Black Spring,’ Marko Ivic shares, “I wrote Black Spring for a theatre piece with the same name, written by Espen Hjort in 2020. The play is about the end of a love affair. After a sudden breakup, the main character goes for a walk, in order to find comfort in nature. But nature is just gone. He spends the night looking for it, but it has disappeared completely. I was motivated by Espen’s parallelisms between a love story and the ecological catastrophe we are witnessing today. Black Spring tries to capture the depth of a love story amidst the destructive forces surrounding it, while still looking up for a beam of light to hold on to. It’s a beautiful exemplification of our complicated love story with planet earth.”
Drawing from his diverse cultural roots in Venezuela, Croatia, and Italy, Marko Ivic crafts a rich tapestry of sound that echoes minimalist traditions while maintaining a distinct authenticity. His education in classical piano and live electronics has equipped him with a unique blend of skills, applied masterfully in his electro-acoustic compositions. ‘Black Spring’ stands as a testament to his artistry, capturing the delicate balance between despair and hope and reminding us of the enduring power of love and nature. Marko Ivic continues to inspire, using his music to explore and express the intricate beauty of everyday life.
