Today, Eighty Ninety are back with their third single of the year, with new track Better as Friends. Following on from their previous single Happier, the track is the second release off of the bands forthcoming sophomore EP – an exciting collaborative project created with Grammy-nominated producer Gian Stone. With their signature style that they’ve branded “808s and telecasters”, the pair have been propelling themselves as “ones to watch” with their mesmerizing and intoxicating sound.
Intro-ing the track is a dreamy alt-pop instrumental, accompanied by a range of soft synths; that brings you into the hazy chillwave production, and soaring melodies, that make up the stunning composition of Better as Friends. Driven by gleaming soundscapes, that are filled with lush pop-beats and distinctive guitar riffs; this lays the foundation for Abner’s ethereal vocals and harmonies, that add a gentle but vibrant sentiment to the track.
Drawing on the universal feeling and desire of wanting to stay close to someone you once loved, despite the pain it may cause you; Better as Friends uses emotive lyricism to connect to this well-known theme. With the track written by the duo themselves, alongside Gian Stone, the band speak about how the song is all about “the desire to live in the past rather than face the end, and how loving someone can mean wanting the best for them even if that no longer includes you”.
