Indie-rock outfit The Open Flames have returned in quick succession, revealing their second release ‘Eat Alone’, a brooding, gritty anthem that previews more of their upcoming debut full-length Same Time Next Year. Following on the success of ‘Drop A Coin’, the band builds on the pop-noir sound they’ve begun, turning up the feedback and the reverb for a hurting and touching bit of reflection.
Blending 90s elements with their uniquely full and vast sonic signature, the band create an atmosphere that blends a colossal feeling with a crushing undertone. Lyrics delivered by Dave Eastman explore the anguish of a caregiver attempting to support a loved one, harnessing the emotions deep within his performance. Paige Brubeck’s harmonies add an angelic presence, whilst drummer Evan Sult adds intensifying drums.
“‘Eat Alone’ is about when you want to help someone who’s hurting, and they don’t want the help,” explains Eastman. “It’s a heartbreaking situation that we try to show through a caregiver’s pleas — and memories — and the noise of the song.“
