Making a return to the limelight for the first time in four years, Mykah releases his Afrobeat-tinged debut album Long Time Coming. Showcasing his masterful knack for a range of boundary-pushing production techniques, the producer promises to be one of the most exciting rising stars as he moves from strength to strength.
You can only release your debut album once, so when it does come about, it’s a special moment for all, and that is no different for Mykah’s ‘Long Time Coming’. Setting the tone with an emphatic intro, the first two tracks see Mykah team up with artist Egar Boi to create a boundary-pushing mix of Afrobeat, pop, R&B, and everything in between.
Right from the outset, the album oozes summery vibes, a soundscape that spans silky, hypnotic melodies and percussions that just make you want to keep moving. Releases like ‘Que Se’ and ‘Uche Jumbo’ evoke a laid-back sense of finesse and style from the listener, the kind of feeling that is the product of a single where everything falls into place, and that is no doubt down to Mykah’s production. Speaking about the single, Mykah discusses the new era that the album feels like for him, “This EP represents a new chapter for me as a producer. It’s been four years since my last release, and in that time I’ve grown not just in my music but as a person.”
The run of form continues into the latter half of the album, where artists like Skeelz and D3MY join the mix on ‘Water’ and ‘D3MY’ respectively. Rounding off the project, the album comes to a close with ‘Matilda’, a vibrant, dynamic display of sound and aura, allowing its dynamic rhythms to take full hold of RiNE’s melodies and effortless swagger.
